As compared to marine and brackish fishkeeping, freshwater fishkeeping is relatively more popular amongst hobbyist, with the hardiness of freshwater fish and low maintenance costs being the main contributing factors.

Fishes that are more hardy is typically recommended to beginners, as they require less attention and are not easily affected by changes in water parameters. Some of these hardy freshwater fish includes cichlids, guppies, mollies, bettas, plecos and loaches. Maintenance costs for freshwater fishkeeping can be kept relatively low as specific equipment to salinity levels or maintain a constant water temperature is not necessary.
